BEAUMONT - Trailing by 13 points with six minutes to play, the Lamar University women's basketball made a furious rally to close to within one point of the University of Texas Arlington with 1:36 to play, but could get no closer, as they fell 60-57 Saturday night in the Montagne Center.
The three point loss was the third three point loss in a row for Lamar. They dropped three point decisions to Texas State and UT-San Antonio last week, before beating Sam Houston by five points on Thursday night
Lamar finished the game on a 13-3 run over the final 6:01 of the game, allowing UTA to hit just one field goal in that time. A jumper by UTA's Terra Wallace's with 1:10 to play however, was the nail in the coffin for Lamar though, as it was the final points scored in the game by either team.
The Mavericks used a hot shooting first half to open their lead on the Lady Cards, knocking down 10 of their 19 three pointers in the first 20 minutes. They finished the game 12-27 from behind the arc.
For the game, the Lady Cardinals were led by Audrea Samuel's 19 points and seven rebounds, while LaToya Carson chipped in with 12 points.
The Mavericks were led by Wallace's game-high 23 points, while Tojjany Thompson added 10.
The Lady Cardinal out shot UTA 44.2 percent to 39.1 percent for the game, and out rebounded the Mavs 31 to 27.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again Thursday night, when they take on Northwestern State at 7 p.m. in the Montagne Center.
