BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball lost its second consecutive three-point game Saturday night, dropping a heartbreaker 53-50 to the University of Texas San Antonio at the Montagne Center.
The Lady Cardinals closed to within two points at 52-50 with 19 seconds remaining, and appeared to tie the game with seven second to play when Janique Garrett sank a lay up. The basket however was called off and Garrett was called for an offensive foul, leaving LU in a two point hole.
After a quick foul by the Lady Cardinals, the Roadrunners' Vivian Ewalefo then sank one free throw with six second to play to give UTSA a 53-50 lead. After missing the second free throw, Garrett's three point attempt at the buzzer sailed wide of the rim for Lamar, sealing the victory for UTSA.
The loss is the second three point loss in a row for Lamar, who fell in dramatic fashion Thursday night at Texas State.
The Roadrunners built as much as a 10-point lead on several occasions in the first half, but the Lady Cardinals continued to fight back. Lamar closed to within four points at halftime, as UTSA went into the break with a 25-21 lead.
For the game, Lamar was led by Audrea Samuel's 15 points, while Chelsea Gugliotta chipped in with nine.
San Antonio was led by Ewalefo's 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Lacy Mingee added 10 points.
The Roadrunners out rebounded Lamar 38 to 31 in the contest, and shot 43.8 percent to the Lady Cardinals 30.2 percent from the field.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again Thursday night in Huntsville, when they take on the Bearkats of Sam Houston State at Johnson Coliseum at 7 p.m.
