DENVER, Colo. - The first road game of the year was a rough one for the Lamar University women's basketball team, as the Lady Cardinals were handed a 97-43 loss by the Denver Pioneers Saturday afternoon in Denver Colo.

The Pioneers opened the game on a 19-6 run, which set the tone for the entire game. Denver was able to build on their lead in the opening half, as they took advantage of 19 Lady Cardinal turnovers to post a 48-20 lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw DU shoot a scorching 72.7 percent from the field as they made 16 of 22 shots including five of eight from behind the three point arc to score 49 points. The Lady Cards were not able to keep up with the high scoring Pioneers in the second period, as they shot 34.6 percent from the field and scored 23 points,

Freshman Brittney Williams scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half for Lamar and was the only Lady Cardinal to post double digits in the scoring column.

The Pioneers had four players score in double digits, led by Sara Benham's 18 points.

The Lady Cardinals were out rebounded 37-29 in the game, and turned the ball over 30 times to Denver's 17 giveaways. In addition, Denver passed out 22 assists to the Lady Cardinals 10.

The Lamar women will be in action again Monday night when they take on Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. MT.
