BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team picked up their first win of the 2006 season Saturday afternoon taking out Grambling State 7-0 at Burns Park in Little Rock, Ark. The Cardinals opened the weekend with two losses, falling to Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday and Indiana State Saturday morning.
In the win Filip Kanczula picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dellon Lorimer at the number one singles spot, while Maciej Bogusz won 7-6, 6-0 at the two spot. Jacob Eastwood won in the number three spot, taking out Chad Edwards 7-5, 6-4 and Evan Hays picked up a win when Brandon Williams defaulted.
In doubles play the Cardinals picked up an 8-2 win with the duo of Kanczula and Bogusz taking down Lorimer and Edwards.
The weekend started with a 7-0 loss to Arkansas Little Rock, as the Cardinals were swept in their singles and doubles matches.
The doubles team of Edson Abrao and Eduardo Autran dropped Bogusz and Kanczula 8-3, Dinko Halachev and Ivan Milivojevic knocked off Eastwood and Hays 8-1 and the tandem of German Perez and Rain Roigas took out Cobb and Sticker 8-3.
In singles action, the Cardinals struggled in all but number one singles. Kanczula fell in three games to Autran 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. In number two singles Bogusz fell to Halachev 6-3, 6-2, Eastwood fell 6-2, 6-1 to Milivojevic and Wesley Arnold was taken down 6-0, 6-0 by Abrao in the four spot. Hays dropped his match in the five spot 6-0, 6-1 to Roigas and Sticker was dropped 6-1, 6-1 by Juan Carlos Nunez.
The Cards began Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Indiana State, as they were again blanked in all of their matches.
The number one doubles team of Kanczula and Bogusz fell to Anton Tsymbalov and Christopher Eldon 8-4, Hays and Eastwood were taken out 8-0 by Rishi Behl and Simon Thornewill and Cobb and Sticker fell 8-5 to James Preston and Michael Wenham.
In singles action Sticker played the closest of all the matches, falling 4-6, 7-6, 10-4 to Preston in the number six spot. Kanczula fell in number one singles 6-2, 6-3 to Tsymbalov, Bogusz was dropped by Behl 6-2, 6-4, Eastwood fell 6-2, 6-2 to Thornewill, Arnold fell 6-0, 6-2 to Wenham and Hays lost 6-0, 7-6 to Eldon.
The Cardinals will be in action again on Friday, February 3, when they travel Dallas to take on Bradley.
