Tres Barrera has announced his retirement from professional baseball and will join Sean Allen's staff at Lamar University as the team's hitting coach for the 2027 season.
Barrera spent parts of four seasons in Major League Baseball with the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals from 2019-23, appearing in 57 games. He batted .228 with two home runs and 14 RBIs and was a member of the Nationals' 2019 World Series championship team.
Most recently, Barrera appeared in 16 games for the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, recording 12 hits, one home run and eight RBIs. Over 539 career minor league games, he batted .241 with 449 hits, 51 home runs and 231 RBIs.
A native of Eagle Pass, Texas, Barrera, a catcher, was selected by Washington in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft following his career at Texas.
As a junior in 2016, Barrera earned All-Big 12 honorable mention honors after batting .289 with six home runs, 17 doubles, 35 runs scored and 37 RBIs.
He was named second-team All-Big 12 in 2015, ranking third in the conference in home runs (nine), ninth in slugging percentage (.481) and tied for eighth in walks (33).
As a sophomore, Barrera led the Longhorns in home runs and on-base percentage (.395), while tying for the team lead in runs scored (38) and walks (33). He also ranked second on the team in hits (61) and tied for second in triples (three).
Barrera attended Mission Sharyland High School where he was named a Louisville Slugger first team All-American as a senior in 2013 after batting .452 for his career with 22 home runs.
