Obie Benavides joined the Lamar University Sports Medicine Staff in July of 2019 as an associate athletic trainer. His primary responsibility is managing the health care of the Cardinals baseball team. Benavides also serves as the drug prevention and education coordinator for the athletics department. Prior to arriving at LU, Benavides spent five years at Rice University as an assistant athletic trainer. During his time in Houston, he worked primarily with the Owls' football program. 

Benavides is a graduate of the University of North Texas where he earned a degree in Kinesiology. He earned his Masters of Athletic Training from Texas Tech University – Health Sciences Center where he worked primarily with the Red Raiders football program. In the spring of 2019, Benavides completed his Doctor of Athletic Training from Temple University.

Benavides is a nationally certified athletic trainer and licensed athletic trainer in the State of Texas and a member of the National Athletic Training Association.
