Laura Thompson joined the Lamar University academic staff in February 2021 after spending the previous three years serving as an academic advisor in the Lamar University Advising Center.
Â
During her time working with the LU academic advising center, Thompson helped incoming students make the transition to college life. She was responsible for helping them acquire the services needed to help them achieve their academic goals, advising students on retention initiatives as well as the courses required to help them progress toward graduation. She also assisted with LU’s Summer Orientation Online course for incoming freshmen due to COVID-19. Thompson individually structured the course for each group of majors she advised.
Â
In addition to her day-to-day responsibilities, Thompson also served on committees and worked on special projects, and assisted with outreach at university and recruitment events.
Â
Prior to making the transition to academic advising, Thompson spent five years in the business sector, after serving 10 years in the health industry. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern in May 2014. She received her master’s degree from Kansas State in May 2017.
