Jessie Mudd

Jessie Mudd joined the Lamar University community when he was named head men’s golf coach on July 27, 2015.

He has produced five Southland Conference Golfer of the Month honorees, 19 all-conference players, three first team All-Southland Conference players, two Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and 15 Soutland Conference All-Academic players.

Eighteen of his 19 all-conference players came in the Southland Conference while one came out of the Western Athletic Conference in 2022.

Mudd also had one WAC Male Golfer of the Week honoree with Hugo Hellman being recognized on Feb. 16, 2022.

Two of his five Southland Conference Golfer of the Month recipients have earned the honor twice: Zander Gous (Sept. 2016 and Feb. 2016) and David Schneider Jerez (Oct. 2023 and April 2026).

Mudd's first-team Southland Conference players include Carl Hardin (2023, 2024) and David Schneider Jerez (2026) while his Freshman of the Year are Pedro Marin (2021) and Nathan Woodham (2024).

His program has been recognized nationally for its academic excellence, earning the Golf Coaches Association of America Platform Golf Team Academic Award and Presidents Special Recognition honor in 2025 and the GCAA Outstanding Team Academic Award in 2024.

In addition, three players have been named to the College Sports Communicators All-Academic Men's At-Large team in 2024 while five have been named Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars.

Mudd has led the Cardinals to seven top five finishes at the Southland Conference tournament including three top two finishes in 2019, 2021 and 2024.

The program has won two regular season tournament titles under Mudd: Ogio Utah Invitational (Oct. 3-4, 2016) and the Golden Nugget Invitational (March 2-3, 2026).

The Cardinals set a new 54-hole tournament record at the Golden Nugget Invitational of 823 (274-271-278), surpassing the previous mark of 825 set in 2007 at the Southland Conference tournament. 
 
Mudd came to LU after four seasons as assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, where he helped build a program that finished 18th nationally in 2014. The Wildcats sent two individual golfers to the NCAA Championships in 2015.
 
During Mudd’s time at Kentucky, the Wildcats won three tournaments and finished in the top three a total of 10 times.
 
A native of Louisville, Ky., Mudd was one of the nation’s top junior golfers, earning the title of Kentucky Mr. Golf as a junior and senior, while helping his high school team, St. Xavier, win three state championships. He was ranked as the nation’s top junior golfer by Golfweek Magazine heading into his senior year.
 
A two-time AJGA Polo All-America in high school, Mudd attended the University of Florida on a golf scholarship. During his time with the Gators, Mudd was part of a team that was ranked in the top 10 in three of his four seasons.
 
Mudd posted the fourth-best scoring average by a freshman in school history, carding 15 rounds of par or better placing in the top 10 on three occasions. He was the SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and received PING All-America honors in 2004.
 
Mudd graduated from the University of Florida in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology.
