Jon Phillips joined the Lamar University baseball staff as a volunteer assistant prior to the 2017 season after a very successful playing career at Southern Arkansas and later as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Texarkana. His duties with the Cardinals include infielders and working as the first base coach.

 The Hooks, Texas native helped the Eagles to a 33-20 record and berth in to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. At TAMUT, he coached the infielders and worked Kolton Perfect and Croix Sedillo to fantastic fielding percentages of more than .990. Perfect recorded a team-high 119 assists and added 75 putouts in 195 chances with just one error allowed. He was a part of 13 double plays and registered a .995 percentage. Sedillo finished with a .992 percentage at first base with just four errors in 513 chances. He recorded 482 putouts and 27 assists.

As a player, Phillips was an All-Great American Conference third baseman in 2014 after he led the Muleriders in batting average (.346), on-base percentage (.462) and walks (35). He finished that season with 15 doubles, two home runs and 30 runs batted it.

For his career, he played in 115 contests with a .315 batting average, 85 runs scored and another 60 driven in. He registered 30 extra base knocks (26 doubles, two homers and two triples). The Muleriders were back-to-back GAC Tournament Champions and 2015 regular season champs with Phillips in the lineup.

He played two seasons at Texarkana College and was an all-conference shortstop in 2012. In 48 games, he finished with 50 hits for a .303 batting average, 32 runs, 28 RBI and six doubles. He was voted as NJCAA Region XIV Hitter of the Week during that season too.

While still in college, Phillips was an assistant coach for the East Texas Canes, an 18 and under summer league team, for 2012-2014. During the span, the Canes went 91-11 overall, had 50 NCAA Division I signees and five draft picks.

The 2010 graduate of Texarkana Pleasant Grove High School, he graduated from SAU in 2015 with a bachelors in Physical Education, Wellness and Leisure.
