Catherine Chavez is in her first season as a volunteer assistant with the Lamar University volleyball team after spending four seasons on staff at Northern Arizona University.

During her time in Flagstaff, Chavez was part of a staff that helped develop NAU into one of the premier teams in the Big Sky Conference, and the reigning league champions. During that three-year stretch, the Lumberjacks tallied the third-most overall wins (68) and tied for the second most conference victories (39) among the teams in the BSC.

Chavez played her collegiate volleyball at UTEP, playing for the coach she would eventually work for at NAU – Ken Murphy. During her time in El Paso, Chavez was one of only three players in school history with both 1,000 plus kills and 1,000-plus digs. She finished her career seventh all-time with 1,108 kills and second with 1,229 digs. She garnered five all-tournament selections during her career and also excelled in the classroom as she was named to the Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll all four years. She also served on the UTEP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2007-09.

Chavez is successful coach on the club circuit having coached several age groups with the APAC Volleyball Club and Sunspots Volleyball Club as an assistant from 2007-09 and later as head coach for four seasons (2009-13).

A native of El Paso, Chavez graduated with her bachelor’s degree from UTEP in May 2010.
