Big Red Opening Southland Conference Play at Home Against UT Rio Grande Valley

BEAUMONT, Texas – Southland Conference play opens Thursday as Lamar University concludes its homestand by hosting UT Rio Grande Valley at the LU Soccer Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
 
PREVIOUSLY
The Cardinals built a 2-0 halftime lead over Southern Sunday when lightning delays halted the contest. Because the contest did not complete the required 75 minutes for the match to be considered official, the result was declared a no contest.
 
SOUTHLAND OPENERS
Big Red is 9-7-2 all-time in Southland Conference openers. Lamar's last conference-opening victory came in 2023, when it defeated UIW, 2-0.
 
ALL-TIME VS. UTRGV
Lamar is 2-2-2 all-time against the Vaqueros. The Cardinals' last win over UTRGV was a 2-0 shutout in 2021. Last season, the Vaqueros scored two first-half goals, which led to a 3-1 win over LU in Edinburg.
 
ABOUT THE VAQUEROS
UTRGV evened its record at 4-4 with a 5-1 victory over Concordia (Texas) Sunday. Sophomore Natalie Singleton led the way with two goals, while Anuhea Aalona, Siena Church and Londyn Johnson also found the back of the net. Isabella Burtini leads the Vaqueros in scoring with five goals and two assists for 12 points, which is tied for second in the Southland Conference.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will travel to Natchitoches, La., on Thursday, Sept. 25, to face Northwestern State at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
