Cardinals sit tied for sixth after opening round at Sandestin Collegiate Classic

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. — Lamar University opened the fall season Monday at the Sandestin Collegiate Classic, finishing the first round tied for sixth in the 14-team field at Raven Golf Club at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

The Cardinals recorded one eagle, 16 birdies and 70 pars during the opening round.

Matthew Bramford led Lamar and is tied for sixth place at 3-under-par 67.

Bramford closed his round with a bogey-free back nine, carding three birdies, five pars and an eagle on the 15th hole. He finished the day with four birdies and 11 pars.

Nathan Woodham posted an error-free front nine, recording one birdie and eight consecutive pars to finish at one-under for the day.

Storm Du Toit and Freddie Surgey also turned in bogey-free front nines.

Du Toit recorded two birdies and seven pars on the opening side to make the turn at two under while Surgey opened his round with 16 consecutive pars and stood at even par entering the second round.

Woodham and Du Toit each recorded three birdies during the opening round.

Rory Bennett played the back nine in one-under-par, recording two birdies and six pars. He finished the round with four birdies.

UL Lafayette holds a two-stroke lead over Mercer after posting an opening-round score of 271.

On the individual leaderboard, UT Arlington's Jen Chie Huang holds a one-stroke advantage after carding a 64. Mercer's Lukas Lautrup is second at 65.
