Big Red Ends Home Opener in a Scoreless Draw

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University recorded its 33rd shutout in the Nathan Kogut era during its home opener against Sam Houston Sunday evening, but was unable to find the back of the net, leading to a scoreless draw.

Big Red's offense took 16 shots, including six on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Eloise Bywater faced nine shots and recorded five saves to pick up her third career shutout.

The Cardinals came out attacking on the offense early in the first half by taking the game's first 11 shots, including four in the opening five minutes. LU almost seized the lead in the 39th minute when the ball bounced off the crossbar. SHSU was held without a shot until the 41st minute, when it took three to end the first half.

Each side combined for 11 shots in the second half, but both teams failed to capitalize (Sam Houston in the 54th minute and LU in the 74th and 86th minutes). In the 88th minute, SHSU created two chances, but were stopped by Bywater and the Cardinals' defense to preserve the shutout.

Big Red flips its attention to a Thursday road contest against Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. The match will kick off at 7 p.m and will be streamed on ESPN+.
