Cardinals Drop Southland Championship Series Opener in 10 Innings

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Reagan Smith and Lamar University battled McNeese to the 10th inning in game one of the Southland Conference Championship series before the Cowgirls walked it off to win, 1-0, Thursday evening.

Smith pitched 9.1 innings in a losing effort, allowing seven hits and walking five batters while striking out a pair. Cimara-lei Wessling and Sicily Windham recorded LU's only hits of the game.

For the first five innings, Smith traded zeroes with McNeese starting pitcher Maddie Taylor while the Cardinal defense made stellar plays. Makenzie Wright threw out a runner a second following a strikeout in the third, while Windham started a double play to end the fourth.

Windham reached base in the fifth on a one-out single but was then caught in a double play. The Cardinals managed one base runner for the rest of the game on a walk. LU's defense had to hold off the Cowgirls, who had the winning run in scoring position in innings seven through nine. Ultimately, McNeese ended the contest with a one-out double to right-center that scored the winning run.

LU will try to stave off elimination in game two, which will take place Friday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
