BEAUMONT, Texas — It was a matchup between two of Division I's top strikeout pitchers as Oregon State's Dax Whitney squared off against Lamar University's
Chris Olivier on Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Whitney entered the game leading the nation in strikeouts while Olivier ranked tied for seventh.
Whitney delivered a dominant performance, tossing a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Beavers to an 8-0 shutout of the Cardinals.
Oregon State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Adam Haight drove in the game's first run with an RBI double down the left field line, and Jacob Galloway followed with an RBI single through the left side.
Bryce Hubbard extended the Beavers' advantage to 4-0 in the second inning with a two-RBI single through the left side.
LU limited Oregon State offensively for much of the middle innings, holding the Beavers hitless until Josh Proctor's infield single in the fifth.
Hubbard added his third RBI of the night in the seventh, launching a leadoff home run to right field.
The Beavers put the game away in the ninth, loading the bases after two walks and a hit by pitch.
A.J. Singer brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to right, followed by an RBI groundout from Paul Vazquez.
Cooper Vance capped the scoring with an RBI single to left center.
Oregon State's pitching staff combined to strike out 13 batters while allowing five hits and three walks.
