FORT WORTH, Texas — Lamar University built a 5-0 lead early before the TCU Horned Frogs used an eight-run surge over five innings to pull away for an 8-6 victory Tuesday night at Charlie and Marie Lupton Baseball Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning.
A.J. Taylor led off with a one-out single through the left side, and
Tab Tracy followed with a single to right.
A throwing error by the right fielder allowed Taylor to score.
Hector Rodriguez added Lamar's third consecutive hit with a single to right before
Kevin Duran drew a walk to load the bases.
Brayden Evans hit a hard ground ball to second base, but the fielder was unable to handle it, allowing another run to score on the error.
Lane Sparks and
Braden Benton then drew consecutive walks with the bases loaded to cap the rally.
LU extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the second inning when Tracy came home on a passed ball.
Starter
Gage Burdick was cruising early, retiring the first six batters he faced and carrying a no-hitter into the third.
The Horned Frogs recorded their first baserunner when Jack Bell drew a leadoff walk in the third.
TCU later loaded the bases on two additional walks, with Sawyer Strosnider drawing a bases-loaded walk to put the Horned Frogs on the board and end the shutout.
TCU notched its first hit in the fourth inning with a leadoff single to right by Noah Franco.
The Horned Frogs put their first three runners aboard before Kyuss Gargett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Lucas Franco followed with a fielder's choice groundout to second base to drive in another run.
TCU added three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple to center field by Chase Brunson.
Strosnider followed with an RBI double to left center in the sixth, extending the lead.
LU threatened in the top of the seventh as the Cardinals' first three batters reached base.
Evans worked a four-pitch walk, Sparks singled up the middle and
Reese Beheler drove in a run with a single through the left side.
TCU pushed across its final run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Franco.
