BEAUMONT, Texas — It was the third extra-inning game in the last four contests as Lamar University fell to Incarnate Word, 5-3, in 10 innings Saturday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
LU held a 3-1 lead through six innings before UIW used two home runs to pull away for the victory.
LU scored first in the opening inning when
Tab Tracy walked, advanced to second on a balk and came home on a pair of wild pitches.
UIW answered in the top of the second with a first-pitch, leadoff solo home run to right-center by Cris Enriquez, tying the game at 1-1.
LU regained the lead in the bottom of the second as
Kevin Duran singled to third and
Braden Benton drew a walk to put two aboard with no outs.
Theo Kummer moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, setting up an RBI single by
Lane Sparks to make it 2-1.
LU extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth.
Kummer led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and Sparks followed with a bunt single.
Beau Durbin then hit into a double play, allowing Kummer to score.
UIW cut the deficit to one in the sixth, using three consecutive singles with two outs, capped by an RBI single through the right side from Jake Weaver.
After LU was held hitless for three straight innings, UIW tied the game in the seventh on a one-out solo home run to right-center by Preston Newberry.
The decisive blow came in the top of the 10th, when Cole Tabor launched a two-run home run to right-center to secure the win for UIW.
