BEAUMONT, Texas – Cala Wilson drove in three runs, including the game-winning two-run double in the sixth inning, as Lamar University defeated Stephen F. Austin, 7-5, Saturday to clinch the series. This was the first series victory over the Ladyjacks since 2019.
Wilson finished with two of LU's 11 hits along with
Gracee Hess (RBI).
Ariel Flores delivered three hits and scored twice.
Madison Guidry (2.1 IP, four hits, four runs, two K) and
Ava Prejean (3.0 IP, one run, three hits) both made appearances in the circle, but it was Kayle Cuevas (three hits), who earned the victory with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
After SFA started the scoring with a run in its half of the first, the Cardinals plated a run in their first two at-bats on an RBI single by Wilson and an RBI double by Hess. The Ladyjacks retook the lead with three runs in the top of the third, but LU tied the game with a sac fly by Whitley and an RBI single by
Kamaryn Radford.
Pitching cooled off both offenses for the next two innings before SFA broke the deadlock with a one-out double in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals put two runners on base when Wilson came up and sent one into the gap for her two-run double to hand LU the lead. Moments later, a mishandled fly ball from SFA's leftfielder off the bat of Whitley scored Wilson to double the cushion. After relieving Prejean in the sixth, Cuevas returned to pitch the seventh with a two-run lead. Though the Ladyjacks brought the go-ahead run to the plate, Cuevas recorded the final out to clinch the series.
LU will return for the final game of this current four-game homestand when it hosts Texas State Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
