VICKSBURG, Miss. – Lamar University recorded wins all nine courts to shutout Alcorn State, 7-0, Sunday morning to win the recent three-match road swing. The Cardinals have now won three of their past four matches.
Big Red dominated the doubles play surrendering just one game combined on courts 1 and 3. The only close doubles match came at No. 2 but the duo of sophomore
Fabian Anthin and freshman
Vicente Monge was up to the task outlasting Alcorn's No. 2 pair, 7-5.
Lamar turned up the heat in the transition to singles taking first-set victories on all six courts, including a tiebreak victory from
Stefano Chappuis. A late lineup change, Chappuis was moved to No. 3 on the ladder and bested Alcorn's Vicent Llobell Buigues, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Fortunately, for Lamar the contest on court 3 was the final one to finish as LU had already recorded the overall victory with wins from Monge (court 4), freshman
Rintaro Shukuda (No. 1) and Anthin (No. 2).
Lamar also received singles wins from senior
Guy Dagan and freshman
Axel Bergh to close out the dominating performance.
The Cardinals return home Saturday, Feb. 21, when they will host Dillard University in a doubleheader. The first match against Dillard is set for a 10 a.m. start followed by a 2 p.m. for the afternoon match. Both matches will take place at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
