BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University begins a three-game road trip as it heads to Nacogdoches for a rematch with Stephen F. Austin Saturday at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game starts at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Newstalk 560 KLVI.
PREVIOUSLY
The Cardinals (14-7, 11-3 SLC) overcame a nine-point deficit in the second quarter to take down Northwestern State, 54-45 at Neches Arena Thursday.
Jacei Denley led all scorers with 18 points while R'mani Taylor recorded 15 points, including 10 in the third quarter. LU remains tied for second in the Southland Conference standings along with UT Rio Grande Valley and trails first-place McNeese by two games.
FOUR FOR FOUR D STYLE
The Cardinals allowed just four points in the fourth quarter to NSU Thursday. The Demons were unable to score in the first nine minutes while missing 12 consecutive field goals. The Cardinals held NSU scoreless for more than 13 minutes at one point in the second half. This was the second-fewest points LU has allowed in a quarter this season. The fewest it has conceded was two against St. Mary's (TX).
JACEI IS ACCURATELY CORRECT
Denley is one of the conference's most accurate shooters on the floor. Against SLC opponents, Denley has made a conference-best 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from behind the three-point line despite missing three games. She also has the sixth-highest field goal percentage (51.2%), making 44 of 86 attempts.
LAST TIME VS. STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
The Cardinals took down SFA, 73-63, in their last meeting at Neches Arena two weeks ago.
Kamryn Wilson went off for a career-high 29 points on 12-of-20 shooting. LU became the first SLC team to hold the Ladyjacks to under 70 points in a league game. It was the Cardinals' 19th victory over SFA in the history of these two rivals.
ABOUT THE LADYJACKS
SFA (15-8, 9-5 SLC) dropped to two games behind LU after losing to East Texas A&M, 65-64, Thursday evening. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker produced a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench to lead the way. The Ladyjacks are tied with LU in home victories this season (10), but have lost two of the last three.
I SEE THE MILL, BUT I DON'T SAW THE MILL
The William R. Johnson Coliseum, nicknamed the Sawmill, hasn't been the friendliest of venues for the Cardinals as they have won five games in 37 meetings all-time. The most recent victory came in 2018. LU is averaging 56.8 ppg against the Ladyjacks all-time, which marks the lowest of all SLC schools.
NEED A REBOUND? HOW ABOUT THREE?
SFA is second in the conference by averaging close to 41 rebounds per game. Three reasons why are that the Ladyjacks have three of the conference's top five rebounders in Key Roseby (7.5 rpg), Cha Gardner (7.3 rpg) and Aziyah Farrier (6.8 rpg), who place third through fifth, respectively.
UP NEXT
Big Red will head down to South Texas Thursday for a clash with UT Rio Grande Valley at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg. The game will start at 6:30 p.m and will be streamed on ESPN+.
