Cardinal Duo Receives Southland Player of the Week Honors

| By:
FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior running back Jojo Uga and sophomore punter Mason Stallons have been named Southland Conference Players of the Week for their efforts in helping the Cardinals defeat UIW Saturday in Beaumont. Uga garners offensive recognition while Stallons received special team honors. It marks the first weekly superlative for either player and the second and third for the Cardinals this season.

Since Pete Rossomando's arrival, Lamar has received 23 conference player of the week awards, with 16 of those coming on special teams and three offensive selections.

The Cardinals' win streak moved to four after a 38-35 victory over UIW. Lamar improved to 5-1 on the season and into a tie for first in the conference standings (3-0).

Lamar utilized a dominant ground attack to jump out front early and never surrendered its lead to the league's other Cardinals. Big Red ended the day with 275 yards rushing led by a career effort from Uga. The Hyde Park, Mass., native carried the ball 22 times for career-best 144 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 6.5 yards per carry and became the first Cardinal to rush for three scores since the 2019 season opener (Jorday Hoy).

When San Antonio's Cardinals were trying to rally late Lamar handed things over to Stallons to flip the field and the sophomore did not disappoint. He averaged 40.4 yards on five punts with a long of 52 to help keep UIW at bay. Stallons also downed two punts inside the opponent's 20.

Lamar returns to action Saturday when they travel to Hammond to take on Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions will kick off at 4 p.m. from Strawberry Stadium and will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 and streamed live on ESPN+.
