BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University suffered a 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 sweep to Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym.
After two early ties in the opening set, UIW scored two straight points to take a 6-4 lead.
Lamar responded with a 3-0 run to take a one-point advantage.
Maja Malinowska recorded a kill while
Saida Maksoud added an ace during the run.
UIW tied the set at 8-8, but Lamar answered with a kill from
Nisaan Martinez to regain the lead.
The score was tied twice more before Lamar used a 3-0 run to build a two-point advantage.
Lamar maintained its two-point lead following a kill from
Kinley Elms, but UIW responded by outscoring Lamar 7-2 to take a 21-17 advantage.
UIW closed the set with a 4-1 run to take the opener.
UIW opened the second set with an 8-0 run to build a seven-point lead. The advantage grew to nine after UIW scored five unanswered points.
Lamar cut the deficit to five with a 4-0 run highlighted by two kills from Martinez.
UIW extended its lead to six before Lamar responded with a 3-1 run to trim the deficit to four. Maksoud and Malinowska each recorded two kills during the run.
UIW closed the set by outscoring Lamar 4-1 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Lamar took a 1-0 lead early in the third set on a kill from
Grace Hill before UIW took control and never trailed again.
UIW used a 7-0 run to build an eight-point lead.
Lamar cut the deficit to three midway through the set with a 3-0 run and later scored two unanswered points to pull within two.
UIW closed the set on a 7-1 run to secure the sweep.
