Cardinals Drop Doubleheader to Nationally Ranked Baylor Bears
WACO, Texas – Lamar University traveled to Waco, Texas Saturday morning for a doubleheader against the No. 16 Baylor Bears – the match mark the second and third ranked opponents for Lamar in the team's first four matches. Baylor defeated Lamar, 4-0, in the opening contest and came back to record a 7-0 decision in the evening match.
While Lamar was unable to get on the scoreboard the evening match was just shy of three hours, meaning Big Red did not allow things to be easy for the homestanding Bears. The second match saw two courts forced to a third set in singles to go along with the match at No. 1 doubles halted with the Cardinals leading by a game (it was a similar result on court 1 in the first match of the day with LU down just a game when play was halted).
Sophomore
Maxwell Lindstedt won his opening set at the No. 3 position with a 6-2 decision against the Bears' Alexandru Chirita – who entered the day as the nation's 44
th-ranked singles player. Linstedt put Chiritia on the defensive, but he was able to battle back to take the match in the second and third sets.
Classmate
Lukas Hamacher pushed Louis Bowden to the brink at the No. 4 position. Hamacher took the opening set with a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak victory to open the day. The second set would be close to before Bowden battled back to even things up and force a third. Bowden took the match with a 10-4 victory in the extra frame.
The Cardinals will now get two weeks to prepare for their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 31
st against Rice. The match against the Owls is slated for an 11 a.m. start from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
