Cardinals Held Down by the Rice Owls

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar was held scoreless by eight saves from Rice goalkeeper Kirsten Ruf, which led to a 2-0 defeat Sunday evening at the LU Soccer Complex.

The Cardinals took 12 shots on Ruf, including nine combined from the trio of Cena Carlson, Lauren Smith, and Anneliese Switzer. Freshman goalkeeper Eloise Bywater recorded four saves for LU.

Rice got its two goals from Leah Chancey, who netted both in the first half. She struck her first goal just three minutes in as she connected with her right foot. Then, in the 16th minute, she headed the second one to give the Owls a 2-0 lead, which would hold for the remainder of the half.

Rice tried to extend its lead early in the second half, but was denied by the Cardinal defense. Big Red never managed to get on the board as Rice held them in check throughout the 90 minutes.

All the credit to Rice tonight," said head coach Nathan Kogut. "They capitalized on our mistakes early and we never seemed to be able to bounce back like we have most of the nonconference season. It's frustrating to drop a home match, but we scheduled games like this for a reason. We will learn from this match, and I hope to see a better response from our group next week."

LU will be back in action Thursday for its third game of the current homestand. The Cardinals will host Texas A&M - San Antonio at 6 p.m. from the LU Soccer Complex.
