Huff, Malone Named Southland Players of the Week

| By:
FRISCO, Texas – Juniors Kendric Malone and Andrew Huff have been named Southland Conference Players of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. Huff received defensive honors while Malone received the special teams honor. It marks the second consecutive week Lamar has received both honors.

The Cardinals went on the road and defended their national ranking at Texas Southern defeating the Tigers, 31-7. Big Red built a huge first half lead and never trailed.

A huge reason for the win came from Lamar's special teams. The Cardinals blocked two punts which were recovered for touchdowns and blocked a first half field goal when the score was still close. Malone was credited with both blocked punts including one which came at the end of the TSU's opening possession to start the game. The loose ball was scooped up by Nyir Jones who carried it 20 yards into the end zone for the game's first score. Early in the second quarter, Lamar's defense forced another stop and again Malone broke through for the block which was recovered by Joshua Robinson.

A transfer to Lamar this season, Huff recorded four stops, including two unassisted tackles, and was credited with 1.5 sacks for 12 yards in losses. He was one of two Cardinals with 1.5 sacks on the day.

The Cardinals' defense picked up right where it left off from week two. Over the course of the past two games, Lamar's defense has surrendered a grand total of 20 points (10.0 ppg). The defense seems to only get stronger as the game goes on with just three of those 20 coming in the second half. The Tigers were limited to just 196 yards of offense for the contest.

Lamar is off this week and returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host Central Arkansas.
