Cardinals' Strong Defense Leads to Scoreless Draw with UC Davis

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University (0-3-1) posted another strong defensive performance Thursday evening - building off the 2024 team's success - but struggled to find the back of the net, ending the home opener in a scoreless draw with a tough UC Davis squad.

Freshman goalkeeper Eloise Bywater posted her first shutout of the season, making two saves as she faced eight shots from the Aggies.

On the other side of the ball, LU's offense fired 18 shots on UCD goalkeeper Cat Pieper, who totaled six saves for the match.

Following Lauren Smith's opening shot 49 seconds in, the Cardinals started the match on the offensive for 17 minutes. A quick two-shot barrage in the 23rd minute nearly gave the Aggies the lead, but Bywater saved one while the other went off-target. Both teams were unable to get the upper hand going into intermission.

As the second half began, the Cardinals dominated possession and posted 11 shots while holding UCD to three. Much like the Aggies in the first half, LU had two quick shots in the 68th minute and couldn't capitalize on either. As the final 10 minutes ticked down, the Cardinals created a flurry of scoring chances, but were not able to break through, ending the match, 0-0.

The Cardinals will conclude the month of August Sunday in Huntsville to take on Sam Houston. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
