BEAUMONT, Texas — During the second set, the Lamar University volleyball team showed a lot of grit being able to go toe-to-toe with the defending Sun Belt Conference champion Texas State Bobcats on Saturday afternoon during an exhibition match in front of a jam-packed crowd at the McDonald Gym.
Texas State ended up coming away with the sweep, 25-14, 25-23, 25-12.
Both teams were engaged in 16 ties while there were seven different lead changes during the second set.
Kinley Elms had six kills during the set.
Taisha Rhone came away with the first kill of the match for the Cardinals as she ended a 3-0 run by the Bobcats in the opening set.
Texas State, a program that has been to the NCAA tournament the last two seasons, was just too much to handle for the Cardinals.
Rhone and Elms each led LU with seven kills.
Jo Moffitt tallied 13 assists to aid the offense while
Alexa Gonzalez finished with 11.
Gonzalez led the defense with seven digs while
Gabby Baker added with five.
At the net, the Cardinals had two block assists from Elms and
Daniella Udegbunam.
LU travels to DeLand, Fla., for the two-day Stetson Hatter Invitational on Friday to take on Northern Illinois and Southern Miss at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
