Cards hang tough with No. 1 Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas — Lamar University had the No. 1 team in the nation on the ropes until the bottom of the eighth when the Texas Longhorns scored five runs to pull away with the 9-3 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.

Zak Skinner caught his seventh runner stealing to get the Cards out of the bottom of the first.

The Longhorns threatened in the bottom of the second by loading up the bases on three walks. 

LU prevailed by getting out of the inning with a 1-2 putout from Carter Sutton to Skinner. Texas ended up leaving 15 runners stranded as it left the bases loaded five times.

Brayden Evans started off the top of the fourth with a leadoff bunt single. Skinner was then walked and then both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Easton Culp lined an RBI single to left to end the shutout.

Texas tied up the score in the bottom half of the fourth with an infield RBI single by Jonah Williams.

The Longhorns took the lead when Kimble Schuessler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Texas extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth by taking advantage of four walks. Casey Borba ultimately drew the bases-loaded walk to bring in a run.

LU loaded up the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter in the top of the sixth. Culp cut the deficit to one by driving in a run on a fielder's choice to second.

The Longhorns got back another run with a bases-loaded walk drawn by Tommy Farmer IV in the bottom of the sixth.

Skinner cut the deficit to one run with a 390-feet solo home run to right center in the top of the eighth.

Texas answered back in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run home run to right field by Borba to make the score 6-3.

The Longhorns kept the inning alive with a two-out two-RBI double to left center by Rylan Galvan.

Jalin Flores followed up with an RBI single to right, extending the lead to six runs.

  • Skinner finished 2 for 2 with a single, home run, two walks and an RBI. Skinner has now reached base safely in 11 straight games.
  • Damian Ruiz went 2 for 4 with a single and a double.
  • Culp had two RBIs to go 1 for 4 with a single.
  • Evans tallied a single to finish 1 for 4. Evans extended his on base streak to nine games.
  • Sutton threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. He had a no-hitter until the fourth inning.

The Cards host Houston Christian for a three-game series beginning Thursday, May 8 at 6 p.m. to close out the regular season.
