EDINBURG, Texas — Lamar University's season came to an end Friday afternoon when it fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 12-5, in an elimination game during the Southland Conference tournament at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
LU's pitching staff made history in the bottom of the eighth when
Peyton Havard struck out the leadoff batter to give the staff six strikeouts for the afternoon, which broke the single season program record for strikeouts.
This year's staff finished with 491 strikeouts to break the original record of 490 set in 2006.
The Cards got things started early in the top of the first when
Matt Ryan hit a one-out single to left center and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder.
Brayden Evans followed up with an RBI single to right center.
A&M-Corpus Christi answered back quickly in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single up the middle from Trey Cruz.
The Islanders then took the lead when Isaac Webb scored on an error.
Heladio Moreno hit a leadoff double to left in the top of the second and then
Damian Ruiz tied up the game with a one-out RBI double to left.
A&M-Corpus Christi took back the lead in the bottom half of the second when Jackson Smith brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Islanders tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third on a fielding error and one run on walk drawn with the bases loaded.
Bryce Grizzaffi got things started in the top of the fourth with a single through the left side while he later stole second.
Ryan then cut the deficit with an RBI single to left center.
A&M-Corpus Christi loaded up the bases on two walks and a single in the bottom of the fourth. Cade Sanchez then made the score 7-3 with an RBI single to right.
The Islanders extended their lead to six runs on a pair of RBI groundouts from Logan Vaughan and Karson Krowka.
Ryan hit a one-out solo home run to left and then Evans scored on a throwing error by the catcher in the top of the sixth.
With the bases loaded, Drake Kerr hit an RBI single to right in the bottom half of the sixth.
Chance Reisdorph then scored on a wild pitch while Smith brought in a run with a groundout to second.

- Ryan finished 3 for 5 with two singles, a home run and two RBIs. Ryan extended his on base streak to 12 games while he hit his eighth home run of the year.
- Evans went 2 for 5 with a pair of singles and an RBI. Evans extended his hitting streak to seven games while he finishes the season with a team-best 56 RBIs.
- Reese Beheler had two singles to go 2 for 4.
- Moreno tallied a single, double and a walk to go 2 for 4.
- Skinner extended his on base streak to 16 games as he finished 1 for 5 with a single.
- Ruiz went 1 for 5 with a double and an RBI. He finished with a team-high 22 doubles.
- Grizzaffi finished 1 for 2 with a single and a walk to extend his on base streak to 13 games.
- Easton Culp and Hector Rodriguez each went 1 for 1 with a single. Culp also reached on a walk.
