CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Lamar University (21-17, 9-6 SLC) brought out the bats as it scored 12 runs to end a six-inning contest 12-0 over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-26, 3-12 SLC) Saturday at Chapman Field. This puts LU in fourth place in the Southland Conference standings by a half-game over Stephen F. Austin.
Cala Wilson and
Trinity Brandon (HR), who each had three RBIs and scored two runs, were two of four Cardinals with two hits along with
Jayne Sepulveda (RBI) and
Sicily Windham (RBI).
Gracee Hess scored three runs and drove in an RBI while
Veronica Harrison drew three walks and had an RBI double.
Kaylee Cuevas got her first win of the season pitching six shutout innings and allowing three hits while striking out one batter.
Following two scoreless innings, LU plated five runs in the third inning. A wild pitch that scored Hess was followed by RBI doubles from Harrison and
Makenzie Wright and singles from Wilson and Brandon. Big Red created a two-out rally after Hess reached on an error and scored on an RBI knock from Sepulveda to make it 6-0.
The Islanders threatened in the fifth inning when the first two runners reached base, but Cuevas recorded two groundouts to herself and got the third out on a pop fly to short. Six insurance runs came in the sixth as Hess drove in Windham. Wilson drove in two runs on a double before coming in to score on a two-run blast from Brandon. Windham returned to the plate to single in pinch runner Mikayla Valle. Cuevas finished off Corpus Christi in the last of the sixth to end the series with a sweep.
The Cardinals will have two conference series this week. First up will be a home series against Southeastern Louisiana with the opening doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
