Solid Cardinal Pitching Occurs in Doubleheader Split

BEAUMONT, Texas - Madison Guidry and Emma Wardlaw both went the distance for Lamar University (26-20) in Tuesday's doubleheader against Tarleton State (28-16) at the LU Softball Complex. While the Cardinals' offense dropped the earlier contest by the score of 1-0, they earned the split with a 2-0 victory in the second game.

Kalie Amos posted the lone Cardinal hit in game one. Jayne Sepulveda, Cala Wilson, and Trinity Brandon were able to reach base by drawing a walk. Guidry took the loss despite allowing a run on four hits and striking out three batters in seven innings.

Veronica Harrison posted two hits while she and Brandon each drove in a run in game two. Wardlaw allowed four hits and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts in the circle.

Game 1: Tarleton State 1, Lamar 0

The first two Texan hitters reached on singles in the top of the first before a line drive to Harrison resulted in a double play to kill off the early threat. Guidry held the Texans in order for the next two innings but couldn't prevent them from scoring a run on a two-out single in the fourth.

LU was held without a hit for five innings until Amos led off the sixth with a single to center. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was held there following a pair of flyouts. The Cardinals threatened in the seventh with a pair of walks to Wilson and Brandon but struck out three times to end the 1-0 contest on the short end.

Game 2:  Lamar 2, Tarleton 0

The Cardinals scored their two runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Harrison and Brandon. The Texans wouldn't threaten until the fourth where they put two on with one out. Groundouts to Amos and Brandon helped Wardlaw escape the inning unscathed.

In LU's bottom of the fifth, Amos led off with a double and advanced to third, but was unable to be brought in. Wardlaw struck out the side in the fifth and got help from a double play to end the sixth to keep LU up by two. The potential tying run would step up for Tarleton in the seventh but Wardlaw got Tarleton's Braylin Pannill to fly out to end the game.

LU continues its home stretch Thursday when Houston Christian comes to Beaumont. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for a 3 p.m. start.
