LU scores 11 runs in seventh to defeat Sam Houston, 18-9

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Scoring 11 runs in the seventh, Lamar University propelled its way to an 18-9 win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

LU improves to 12-0 in midweek games while extending its winning streak to five games.

The Bearkats sent seven batters to the plate in the bottom of the first as they had three hits to take a 2-0 lead.

LU loaded up the bases on a leadoff infield single by Zak Skinner and back-to-back walks issued to Matt Ryan and Tab Tracy in the top of the second.

Reese Beheler was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Easton Culp followed up with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Ryan.

Damian Ruiz drew a walk to load up the bases for Brayden Evans who crushed a grand slam to right to give the Cards a 6-2 lead.

Sam Houston State cut the deficit in half with an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the third.

The Bearkats loaded up the bases in the bottom of the fourth and then got a grand slam to left center to give them a 7-6 lead.

Sam Houston State extended its lead to 9-6 on a two-RBI double to left field in the bottom of the sixth.

The script was flipped in the top of the seventh when the Cards got a three-run home run by Evans to tie up the game and spark an 11-run rally after four straight scoreless innings.

Spinn delivered an RBI triple to right center and then Tracy brought in Ryan with a sacrifice fly to center.

Beheler and Culp followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Ruiz then hit an RBI infield single to third base.

Skinner drew a bases-loaded walk and then Spinn hit a two-RBI double down the left field line.

LU extended its lead to nine in the top of the ninth after Ruiz scored off a wild pitch.

  • Evans finished 2 for 5 with two home runs, two walks and seven RBIs. Evans has 12 RBIs in his last three games.
  • Spinn went 3 for 6 with a single, double, triple and three RBIs.

  • LU's pitching staff tallied 13 strikeouts after using 10 different pitchers. Fabian Ramirez struck out four batters in two innings of relief.
  • This is the 15th time this season the Cardinal pitching staff strikeouts out 10 or more batters in a game.
  • Joshua Shimmin improved to 1-0 after pitching a scoreless 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
