Lamar Rallies for Senior Day Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University dropped the doubles point to Nicholls but rallied for a dominant 5-2 victory over the Colonels Monday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The victory marks LU's second-consecutive conference win and provides Big Red with some momentum as they prepare for the Southland Conference Championships.

Lamar did not allow its guests to hold the momentum for long as the Red and White took advantage of the transition from doubles to singles hitting the reset button. The Cardinals pulled even at 1-1 following freshman Arina Gudovskaya's straight-sets victory over Nicholls Aada Inna, 6-3, 6-4.

Gudovskaya's victory sparked a run of three-straight Lamar wins to give LU a commanding 3-1 lead. Sophomore Martina Alcaino defeated Nicholls' Constanza Cruz, 6-4, 6-2, and classmate Savannah Bijlsma followed suit with an identical 6-4, 6-2 decision over Blanca Losada at No. 5.

With courts 5 and 6 in the win column, Lamar needed just one of the final two courts for the overall team win. Cardinal fans wouldn't have to wait long for the clincher as LU took two of the final three matches for the overall score.

The Cardinals will now wait for the rest of the regular season matches around the league to conclude to see who they will face in the first round of the tournament. In the final week of the regular season, Lamar jumped from the bottom of the conference standings into the middle of the pack.
