BEAUMONT, Texas — They aren't called the "Cardiac Cards" for nothing.
For the fourth time in the last six games, Lamar University found some more late-inning magic to deliver another walk off win.
Trailing 8-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals scored five runs to rally back for the victory as
Zak Skinner hit the game-winning RBI single to right center Saturday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium to lift his team over Nicholls, 9-8.
LU has now won 14 of its last 15 games. Skinner delivered his third walk off of the season.
Nicholls took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as it scored runs off a wild pitch and an error.
Chase Jans extended the Colonels lead to 3-0 in the top of the second with an RBI double through the left side of the infield.
In the top of the fourth, the Colonels made the score 4-0 by scoring on a fielder's choice to short off the bat of Aaron Biediger.
The Cards erased the shutout in the bottom half of the fourth as
Bryce Grizzaffi brought in a run on a groundout to first.
LU picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth when
Hector Rodriguez scored on a balk.
Nicholls answered back by extending its lead to four runs in the top of the sixth after an RBI single by Carter Jenkins and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Noah Detillier.
Down by four in the bottom of the eighth, Grizzaffi hit a leadoff single.
Matt Ryan followed up with a two-run home run to left to cut the deficit back down to two runs.
Nicholls tallied a two-run home run of its own to increase its lead back to four in the top of the ninth.
Zane Spinn hit a leadoff single up the middle to get things going in the bottom of the ninth. Grizzaffi was then hit by a pitch with one out.
After reviewing the play, Grizzaffi was awarded first base.
Ryan then came into the clutch once more by crushing a three-run home run to left field to get the Cards within one run.
Damian Ruiz drew a two-out walk and then
Brayden Evans tied up the game with an RBI double down the right field line.
Heladio Moreno was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive. Skinner then stepped up once agan with the clutch single.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Ryan finished 2 for 2 with two home runs and five RBIs. He was also hit by a pitch for the 10th time this season.
- Ruiz went 2 for 4 with two singles, two walks and a stolen base. He has now reached base safely in 36 games while his hitting streak is now at 19 games.
- Evans had a single and a double to go 2 for 6 with an RBI.
- Grizzaffi extended his hitting streak to five games going 2 for 3 with two singles, a walk and an RBI.
- Skinner was walked three times to finish 1 for 3 with a single and an RBI. He extended his hitting streak to five games.
- Spinn went 1 for 4 with a single and a walk.
- Moreno had a single to go 1 for 5 with a run scored.
- The Cards finished with 11 hits while Nicholls had 15.
- Nine batters were hit by a pitch.
- Hayden Stallings faced one batter in the ninth to notch the win, improving to 3-0.
- Luke Krkovski struck out four batters in five innings of relief.
- LU's pitching staff tallied seven strikeouts.
