BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University (18-17) put up three first inning runs to open Tuesday's contest with Houston (20-13) at the LU Softball Complex, but The Cougars rallied from behind to take down LU, 4-3 and sweep the season series.
Cala Wilson (RBI) and
Raigan Brannon each had two hits, including a double to lead the Cardinals.
Trinity Brandon and
Sicily Windham each drove in a run as LU finished with seven hits offensively.
Kaylee Cuevas got the start and allowed three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings in the circle while
Reagan Smith was tagged with the loss giving up a run on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Cuevas got into trouble early on as Houston loaded the bases with two outs, but the freshman struck out the last hitter to get out of the jam. LU then put three runs on the board in its first when Wilson singled in
Jayne Sepulveda while Brandon doubled in
Veronica Harrison and was followed by an RBI groundout by Windham, which made it 3-0.
In the second, Cuevas received help from her defense as center fielder
Gracee Hess robbed a base hit off the fence to keep the Cougars scoreless. Houston tied the game in the top of the third while the Cardinals stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars seized the lead an inning later and would hold LU to one base runner the rest of the way.
The Cardinals head south to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game Southland Conference series. Friday's opening doubleheader will see the first pitch delivered at noon.
