BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University (11-9) used a 10-run second inning to defeat Texas Southern, 11-0, in five Wednesday at the LU Softball Complex. This was the fourth time in program history that LU scored double digits in a single inning.
LU recorded eight hits on the day, with Veronica Harrison being the only two-hit performer. She was one of three Cardinals to have multi-RBI (two) games, along with Gracee Hess (three), and Jayne Sepulveda (two). Mallory Pitre picked up her second victory, allowing two hits and striking out six batters in four innings, while Emma Wardlaw pitched a perfect fifth inning with one strikeout.
The Cardinals got the scoring started in the first inning as Harrison singled to right to bring Hess. TSU's only threat came in the top of the second as it put two runners in scoring position with one out. Pitre escaped the jam by retiring the next two hitters with a popout and a strikeout.
LU broke the game open by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the second. Sepulveda drove in two with a double and later stole home. After RBI singles by Harrison and Ava Blakely made it 6-0, Sicily Windham hit a sacrifice fly to score Cala Wilson. Makenzie Wright singled in Trinity Brandon, while Hess cleared the bases with a three-run double putting the Cardinals ahead 11-0. Pitre pitched the next two scoreless frames before Wardlaw retired the side in the fifth to end the contest by a run rule.
The Cardinals will get set to host McNeese this weekend to open Southland Conference play. The first two games will be a doubleheader scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m.
