Gonzo's Heroics Lifts Cardinals to Sweep of Lions

Second Walk-Off Victory This Series

BEAUMONT, Texas - For the second time this series, Lamar University (18-13, 6-3 SLC) came up with a walk-off victory as pinch hitter Rose Gonzales singled in Gracee Hess to lift the Cardinals over East Texas A&M (7-25, 3-6 SLC), 5-4 and complete the series sweep. This was the fifth walk-off victory for the Cardinals this season.

Gracee Hess (two) was the only Cardinal to have a multi-hit game while driving in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. Cala Wilson had two RBIs to go along with her second homer of the season. In her first career start, Kaylee Cuevas lasted 6.1 innings allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out two batters. Mallory Pitre came in to pitch two-thirds and picked up a strikeout, which got her second win of this series.

Although Cuevas hit a batter in the game's opening frame, she secured three defensive outs for an early zero to the Lions. The Cardinals struck for two runs in their first after Veronica Harrison singled to left and Wilson sent one over the left field fence for a two-run homer. ETAMU rallied to tie the game in the top of second only for Sepulveda to single in the go-ahead run in the bottom half.

After a scoreless third, the Lions evened the contest with a two-out single in the top of the fourth. The 3-3 deadlock remained until the seventh when ETAMU scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Raigan Brannon drew a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Aubrey Brown. Kalie Amos moved Brown to second on a sacrifice bunt, which set up Hess's game-tying double to left. Gonzales was called upon to pinch hit and she would single to center scoring Hess and clinching the sweep.

Conference play resumes Friday as the Cardinals begin a three-game series with Nicholls in Thibodaux, La. While Friday's doubleheader starts at 4 p.m., the third game will occur at noon on Saturday.
