No. 2 Cardinals Meeting No. 3 Ladyjacks in Southland Tourney Semifinals

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University (22-7, 17-3 SLC) will begin its Southland Conference tournament run Wednesday with a semifinal matchup against No. 3 seed Stephen F. Austin (27-5, 16-4 SLC) at the Legacy Center in Lake Charles, La. The game is scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m., and will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Newstalk 560 KLVI.

The Cardinals defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 71-54 to close out the regular season. Sabria Dean (15), Akasha Davis (14), and KJ Walker (11) combined for 40 points in the win as LU shot 47.2 percent from the field.

100 Wins
Aqua Franklin earned her 100th career victory as head coach of Lamar University last Wednesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This makes her the fourth coach in Cardinals' history with 100 in the program alongside Pat Park  (109), Larry Tidwell (128), and Robin Harmony (115).  

Honors
Akasha Davis and Sabria Dean were each named All-Southland Conference First Team honorees. Davis averaged 13.1 points and nine rebounds per game and made the first team for the third time. Dean averaged close to 14 points and is a first team honoree for the second time.  

LU Tournament History
Big Red is making its 18th appearance in the conference tournament and is 12-16 all-time. The Cardinals reached the conference championship game four times winning it all in 2010. Last season, LU returned to the conference title game but fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 68-61.

Last Time vs. SFA
The Cardinals split their season series with the Ladyjacks, winning 77-74 in Beaumont while losing 72-66 in Nacogdoches.  Sabria Dean averaged 24 points in the two games with SFA. All time, the Cardinals are 18-63 against the Ladyjacks.

The Ladyjacks
SFA entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 7 Nicholls, 77-65 in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Faith Blackstone is second in the conference in scoring with 15.4 points per game, which included 16 in the win over the Colonels. The Ladyjacks average a conference-best 78.8 points per game and give up 61.8 per game.  

Up Next
Should the Cardinals win, they will take on the winner of No. 1 Southeastern and No. 4 UIW Thursday in the SLC Championship Game. The game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m and will be broadcast on Newstalk 560 KLVI and streamed on ESPN U.
