Cardinals Fall in Heartbreaking Southland Opener

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University has had to overcome overwhelming injuries during the early part of the season and put up a strong fight but fell just short, 4-3, to UIW Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The back-and-forth affair saw UIW take a three-setter for the final point to close out the day.

UIW started the day strong taking the doubles point but the hometown Cardinals were undeterred. The good guys bounced right back with victories at Nos. 6 (Emma Palus) and 4 (Martina Alcaino) to claim a 2-1 advantage. UIW responded with the next two matches off the court to reclaim a one-point advantage.

Leading by a point with two courts remaining, Lamar would need victories on both for the overall team win. Freshman Arina Gudovskaya would prove victorious in a three-set decision at No. 1 but San Antonio's version of the Cardinals got the decisive victory at No. 5 singles.

The Cardinals will look to bounce back Wednesday when they return to the Thompson Family Tennis Center to take on St. Mary's (TX). The match against the Rattlers will begin at 2 p.m.
