BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University improved to 5-3 (.625) on the season after posting a 7-0 shutout win over Southern Friday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The victory was Lamar's third in the last four matches.
The Cardinals wasted little time recording the first point the match taking quick wins on courts 1 and 2 doubles. Lamar surrendered just one game on the two courts winning 6-1 at No. 1 singles and 6-0 at line 2.
LU actually took a 2-0 lead into singles play as an injury on the Southern roster forced an LU win by forfeit on court 6. Freshman
Santiago Ledesma made it a 3-0 lead with his 6-0, 6-1, victory over Emmanuel Oudensi at No. 4 singles.
With Lamar on the doorstep of the overall team win, the Cardinals didn't have to wait long for the clincher. Big Red took the final four matches with the deciding victory coming from freshman
Louis Drapeau. He ousted Southern's Gabriel Inyang, 6-3, 6-0.
By day's end, the Cardinals had recorded three shutout sets and three more where they surrendered just one game.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14
th, when they travel to Houston, Texas to take on Rice. The match against the Owls is set to begin at 4 p.m.
