BEAUMONT, Texas - For the second time over the weekend, Lamar University (6-3) rallied back from an early two-run deficit to beat Missouri State (1-9), 3-2 at the I-10 Border Classic at the LU Softball Complex. This time, it was Veronica Harrison's go ahead two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the game-winner.
The Cardinals finished with nine hits, including three from Harrison, who drove in two RBIs while Ava Blakely drove in Cala Wilson on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Despite allowing two runs in the first inning, sophomore Madison Guidry earned her first career complete game victory in the circle allowing four hits and striking out five batters.Â
The Bears loaded the bases in the first inning before taking the 2-0 lead. The left-hander from La Porte settled herself and shut out MSU over the final six innings. Wilson singled to lead off the second inning and advanced to third following a hit from Sicily Windham. Blakely's flyout to left would score Wilson to cut the lead in half at 2-1.Â
Despite working into a bases-loaded jam with one out in the top of the fifth, Guidry prevented the tying run from scoring on a force out at the plate. Two outs into the bottom half of the fifth, singles from Jayne Sepulveda and Trinity Brandon set up Harrison, who drove both in for the 3-2 lead. Guidry retired the last six hitters, which notched LU's sixth win of the season.
After nine games at home to start the season, the Cardinals will be away from the LU Softball Complex for the next 12 contests. Wednesday sees LU heading to Houston to take on the Cougars for a midweek showdown. The first pitch will be at 6 p.m.Â
