Big Red Hosting Southland Opener Against UT Rio Grande Valley

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University Cardinals women's basketball team returns to the Neches Federal Credit Union Arena at the Montagne Center Tuesday to start a three-game homestand. It will also open Southland Conference play as UT Rio Grande Valley will be LU's first opponent. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.

PREVIOUSLY
Big Red (2-4) suffered a 62-47 setback against UL Monroe in its most recent game. Kamryn Wilson (14) and Jacei Denley (12) were the only Cardinals in double figures, combining for 26 points. However, it was a cold second half that proved to be decisive as the Cardinals were outscored 36-21 while hitting 34.6 percent from the field.

SLC OPENERS
The Cardinals have started 1-0 in conference play 18 times in the 31-year history with the league. Following a 69-44 victory in Edinburg last season, Big Red has won seven of its last eight conference opening games. This will be the 15th occurrence in which LU opened conference play at home. LU is 10-4 in the previous 14 conference openers.

NECHES ARENA: SAFE PLACE OR HOUSE OF HORRORS?
Over the last two seasons, Neches Arena has been unkind to SLC opponents as the Cardinals have gone 17-2 in their last 19 conference home games while averaging 68.8 points per game. Big Red's 17 wins have been by an average of almost 15 points while the two losses were by one possession.

ALL-TIME VS. UTRGV
In 34 previous meetings against UTRGV, Lamar holds a 28-6 edge. However, the Vaqueros snapped an eight-game skid against LU, 58-56, in Beaumont last season. R'Mani Taylor was one of two Cardinals in double figures as she poured in 12 points.

ABOUT UTRGV
In their most recent contest, the Vaqueros (3-3) fell to No. 8 TCU, 93-57, in Ft. Worth. The trio of Chazlyn Dettor (17), Erin Maguire (14), and Kayla Lorenz (10) collected 41 points between them. UTRGV averages 71.5 ppg, and is led by Jalaylah Ingram, whose 17.8 ppg is second in the SLC.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will next host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 15th, 2025. The game tips off at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
