BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis kicked off the 2025 home schedule in victorious fashion sweeping a doubleheader from Alcorn State Saturday. The Cardinals took the first match of the day, 5-2 and returned to the court to record a 4-0 victory during the afternoon match.
In the opening match, the Cardinals found themselves having to rally from a small, but early, deficit after Alcorn State took the doubles point. Showing no panic, Lamar's youthful squad took the time during the transition from doubles to singles to hit the reset button. Junior
Guy Dagan got LU on the scoreboard with a straight-sets victory over ASU's Jerry Thomas on court six, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Fabian Antin followed suit with a two-set victory on court No. 2.
The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead before Alcorn could hang another point on the scoreboard. Lamar slammed the door shut with victories at Nos. 3 (
Louis Drapeau) and 4 (
Lukas Hamacher) singles for the overall team victory.
It was a slightly different story in doubles of the second match as Lamar took the point with only one close match – court 2 – where Big Red won the match in tiebreak fashion.
Once Lamar got the lead it never looked back. Sophomore
Leon Nickel gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with his straight-sets winner at line 2 singles. He was followed by quick victories from freshman
Santiago Ledesma (No. 5 singles) and junior
Guy Dagan (No. 6 singles).
The Cardinals (2-2) return to action Saturday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Fort Smith, Ark., for a doubleheader against Arkansas-Fort Smith. The first match will start at 10 a.m.
