AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman
Lukas Hamacher picked up a three-set victory at No. 6 singles to get Lamar University on the scoreboard against No. 1 Texas Saturday in Austin, but it wasn't enough as LU loss to the Longhorns, 6-1.
The Longhorns took all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day, but Lamar put up a tough fight on court No. 1. The Cardinals duo of freshman
Fabian Anthin and
Leon Nickel battled UT's Sebastian Gorzny and Jonah Braswell to a tiebreak before coming up just short in the extra frame, 7-6 (7-5).
The Longhorns carried that momentum into singles competition where they took the opening set on each of the six courts, and Texas would eventually take the overall win with singles wins on courts 1, 3 and 5. Despite the shutout, the Cardinals put up a strong fight in the second set on courts 4 and 6 as the Red and White battled to keep the match close.
After dropping the opening set, Hamacher battled back from an opening-set loss to take a 5-2 lead in the second. He would go on to take the set 6-2 and held the momentum in the third. When it was all said and done, Hamacher posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 super tiebreak victory over the Texas' Rahul Sachdev. Sophomore
Stefano Chappuis was attempting to follow suit. He also battled back from an opening-set loss to take commanding 5-2 lead in the second. Chappuis held on for a 7-5 set victory before the 'Horns' Oliver Ojakaar closed out the match in the super tiebreak.
The Cardinals will travel to Waco, Texas Sunday for a noon showdown against the Bears.
