Cardinals Earn First Win in Apolinario Era

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – In three back-and-forth sets, Lamar University volleyball secured a road sweep of Prairie View A&M (25-21, 26-24, 27-25) for their first victory under head coach Ariel Apolinario.

Lamar finished the match 41-14-126 (.214) to go with six aces. Lyric Jordan led the Cardinals with 13 kills while Maja Malinowska recorded her second double-double of the year with 12 kills and 10 digs. She was one of three players to finish with double-digit digs as Keeley Nellis and Taisha Rhone chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.

PVAMU ended with an attack rate of 20.2 percent (44-18-129). Despite seven blocks, the Panthers were hindered by seven service errors and 18 on the attacking front.

Both teams exchanged the lead throughout a back-and-forth first set. After a tie at 20-all, the Cardinals reeled off a 5-1 run to close out the set buoyed by three kills from Jordan and an ace from Alexa Gonzalez.

The Cardinals found themselves in a four-point hole midway through the second set due to several attacking errors. Another 5-1 run, however, would tie things up at 18. Neither team would lead by more than one over the next twelve points until an attacking error from the Panthers handed Big Red the set.

Big Red started fast in the third set hopping out to a 13-8 lead, but the Panthers would crawl back with a run of their own to push Lamar to the brink. The Cardinals would not waver though as they held off three consecutive match points before winning their own to take home the victory and ensure the sweep.

Lamar heads east for a Friday doubleheader in Thibodaux, La. as they start with Grambling at 11 a.m. before facing conference foe Nicholls at 2 p.m. The second match will be a nonconference affair.
