BEAUMONT, Texas – Obie Benavides has been named Lamar University Assistant Athletics Director for Health and Wellness announced Director of Athletics Jeff O'Malley Monday morning.
"I am very excited to announce the promotion of Obie Benavides," said O'Malley. "During this process, Obie's name kept rising to the top. Additionally, his work ethic has garnered the respect of our coaches and staff. It's always a great feeling to be able to promote from within your department. During his time in Beaumont, he has put the health and well-being of our student-athletes first and we look forward to his continued leadership overseeing our 17 varsity sports."
Originally hired prior to the start of the 2019-20 academic season, Benavides is entering his sixth season with the athletics department. During that time his primary role has been working with the LU baseball team while also serving as the drug prevention and education coordinator for the athletics department.
"I am incredibly honored to step into the role of Assistant Athletics Director for Health and Wellness at Lamar University," said Benavides. "It is a privilege to continue serving this remarkable institution and to help drive the success and well-being of our student-athletes. The recent achievements of Lamar athletics showcase the potential of our university, and I am eager to work with our exceptional student-athletes, coaches, and staff to pursue success on and off the field.
"I am deeply grateful to President Taylor, Jeff O'Malley, and the athletic department leadership for their confidence in me. I would also like to thank Coach (Will) Davis for his unwavering support and encouragement throughout my journey here at Lamar," added Benavides.
A graduate of North Texas, Benavides received his masters from Texas Tech where his primary for focus was the Red Raider football program. In spring 2019, Benavides completed his Doctor of Athletic Training from Temple University. Benavides is a nationally certified athletic trainer and licensed in the State of Texas. He is also a member of the National Athletic Training Association.
"I have been preparing my entire career for this opportunity, and I cannot think of a better place to lead a department than at Lamar University," said Benavides. "I'm committed to working tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of our student-athletes and am thrilled to continue being a part of the Cardinal community."
