ABILENE, Texas – Lamar University's soccer team overcame 10 second-half shots against Abilene Christian and relied heavily on great goalkeeping and defense to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard. Neither team's offense was able to break through the opposing defense as the match ended in a scoreless tie.
The story of the night would belong to goalkeepers
Maddie Rich and
Taylor Howard. Rich started and spent 76 minutes in goal by recording five saves. Howard compiled three saves in the final 14 minutes to preserve the shutout. The Cardinals were outshot 14-6 throughout the contest as
Ella Carmody would lead with two shots on goal. Also picking up a shot each were
Annika Kassenbrock,
Trinity Clark,
Arely Alaniz, and
Kamryn Harvey.
Both teams combined for seven shots in the first half. But as the second half got underway, the Wildcats picked up the intensity on offense. Despite the Wildcat chances, Rich recorded three saves in a seven-minute stretch, which included one on a breakaway attempt in the 59th minute.
Another key highlight came from Clark, who prevented ACU's best scoring chance by standing on the goal line and clearing the ball out. Meanwhile, LU's offense was held to three shots in the second half, with one shot coming on goal. Howard subbed in for Rich around the 77th minute and stopped three shots, including the final shot in the waning seconds.
The Cardinals are back home Sunday at 7:00 p.m., as they will kick off with the University of Denver.
