THIBODAUX, La. – After a thrilling come-from-behind extra-inning win in game two of the series, Lamar University was unable to come up with that same electricity Sunday afternoon falling to Nicholls, 3-0, in the series finale. Despite dropping two of three in the series and falling to 38-12 overall, Lamar University leaves Thibodaux with a 1.0-game lead (15-6) in the standings with three conference games to play (four regular-season games remain on the 2024 schedule).
Senior
Hunter Hesseltine gave the Cardinals 5.1 innings allowing just three runs – only one earned – on nine hits with a strikeout. Junior
Jackson Cleveland came on to pitch the final 2.2 allowing just two walks. Unfortunately, Nicholls' duo of Michael Quevedo and Nico Saltaformaggio was just a notch better. Saltaformaggio went 6.0 innings of relief surrendering just four hits with five strikeouts on the day.
Lamar's five hits came from four different batters led by
Zak Skinner's 2-for-4 afternoon. Nicholls took an early lead with solo runs in the first and second innings and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they close out the regular-season home schedule against Alcorn State. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium. It will be streamed live on ESPN+.
