BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University took advantage of 15 walks by the Texas Southern pitching staff to record 20-2 victory Wednesday evening at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 31-8 with the win as they now turn their attention to a weekend series against UIW.
The Cardinals scored their 20 runs on 12 hits while Texas Southern scored two runs on seven hits with an error.
Lamar jumped out to a 9-0 lead with a run in the first, seven in the second, one in third and followed that up with one in the fifth inning and 10 more in the sixth. TSU scored solo runs in the second and fourth innings.
Seven different Cardinals recorded hits Tuesday including four players who had multi-hit efforts.
River Orsak ended the night with a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI and a run scored.
Tanner Wilson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored,
Zak Skinner went 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs and
Luke Bumpus was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior
Drake Varnado ended the night with just one hit but he made it count launching it over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season. He also walked twice in the game and was one of 12 different Cardinals to draw a base on balls.
Senior Threa Morse (4-0) got the start and pitched 3.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits with a walk. Morse was on a pre-determined pitch count and was eligible for the win when he was lifted in the fourth inning.
Morse was one of five pitchers to take the mound Tuesday including
Carter Sutton who made his season debut in the ninth inning.
The Cardinals return to Southland Conference action Friday when they host UIW. The game has been pushed to a 5 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium. The game will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
