BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University softball came up short in Friday 's doubleheader against Incarnate Word. A lack of run support hurt LU in both affairs on the evening.
Jayne Sepulveda led Lamar with two hits in Game 1 while
Brooke Davis knocked in two runs including an RBI double.
Emma Wardlaw pitched all nine innings for LU but got tagged with the loss allowing four runs on ten hits with two strikeouts.
After recording two hits in the first game of the day, Sepulveda extended her current hit streak to eight with a single in Game 2.
Karyana Mitchell got the start for LU lasting four innings while allowing seven runs (six earned) eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
Makayla Valle took the final two innings allowing a run on three hits and a walk.
Game 1: Incarnate Word 4, LU 2 (9)
Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel early on before UIW broke through in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBIs consisting of a groundout and infield single. LU would get a run back in the bottom of the frame on their own RBI groundout from Davis.
Big Red would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as Davis came up big again, this time with an RBI double to knot things up at two as the game moved onto extra innings. A sacrifice fly and RBI triple would give UIW the lead back in the top of the ninth, though. Despite a single and a walk to start the bottom of the inning, Lamar's attempted rally would fall short.
Game 2: Incarnate Word 8, LU 0 (6)
Two LU fielding errors would help score UIW's first run of Game 2 in the top of the second. Lamar would get baserunners to second and third with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but neither were able to cross the plate.
A bunt single doubled the UIW lead in the top of the fourth before a five-run fifth inning busted the game open in their favor led by two RBI doubles. Another run in the top of the sixth would finish things off for the visitors from San Antonio.
LU will commemorate four graduating seniors before Saturday's series finale at 12 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
